Need advice re: living in Malaysia

I was looking at living in Thailand, however after reading various sites I do not like to idea of flooding and crime they have. What about malaysia, its it cheap like Thailand?
where do most of the brits settle?
how easy is it to get a long term visa?

I spend about half of my time in Bangkok - there is minimal crime there, and certainly no crime wave... and no flooding... perhpas you have Thailand mixed up with Jakarta where there has been massive flooding.

No idea on visas.

Thank you very much for your time, I was thinking about staying in Bankok or Pattya Thailand. I saw some info on flooding in Pattya which the local govenment was trying to soft out. What do you think of Thailand when compared to Malaysia?
I see Malaysia speak English which is bonus but Mayasia looks more expensive than Thailand?

Would you say it is better in Malaysia or Thailand, I mean Cleanliness and quality of life, and value for money?
